Is the Idea of working 70 hours a week feasible?
Recently we have come across a comment made by Infosys founder that India must work 70 hours a week for achieving the desirable goal of a stronger economic nation.
Many of the corporations endorsed this comment and at the same time some people are not comfortable with this theory. In the 21st century, one cannot measure the efficiency of work by counting hours. Rather, quality makes sense instead of forcing employees to work at least for the given number of hours. Research shows that efficiency improves if we allow more leisure time to the employees rather than putting pressure on them to work 10-12 hours every day for the whole seven days of a week.
We are not living in the world of Gen X now of the 70s & 80s. It is a time of millennial and Gen
Z now. Their way of life is somewhat much different than the older generations. They are much awake and active for achieving the desired goals. Look at the start-up ecosystem of our country and you will see that they work without counting working hours. Instead they work with a mind set to achieve the desired goal in a stipulated time frame. Corporations must come out with a plan to create an atmosphere to improve efficiency. They must provide a global scale of economy and platform for the younger generation to learn and understand the global trend and to work in an atmosphere where we can compete globally. Providing better learning opportunities and adopting technological advancement will fasten the speed of work efficiency and a platform to stand at par with the developed nations.
In the past most of the work was done physically and that was the reason for working longer hours for better performance. Now time has changed and we are adopting technology, automation and AI everywhere and we need more educated people to work under such an ecosystem rather than counting heads & their working hours. Even in the agriculture sector innovative ideas and research are helping more in increasing yield rather than physical labor. We need more workers of course but we don't need crowds of unskilled labor. Skill and knowledge is the key for achieving success and for which India needs support from corporate houses as well as from government to deliver more skilful & knowledgeable force.
